Mission Statement Our mission is to promote, develop, and strengthen a worldwide organization for independent construction machinery rebuilders, parts suppliers, and manufacturers. We are committed to the expansion and improvement of products and services available to accomplish the maintenance of construction machinery and related industries to the highest standards. IDA strives to promote the cooperation, communication and unity among its members.
To help achieve these goals, the association sponsors an annual conference with seminars and educational sessions. Programs keep members up-to-date, informed and provide opportunities for information exchange.
The Industry General expansion and rebuilding following World War II brought a tremendous influx of heavy equipment machinery to the market. Large manufacturers were so busy building new equipment they inadvertently created a new market which we call the heavy equipment replacements parts market. Heavy equipment operators asked the question: "Is there an alternative source to service my equipment, sell me parts, and take an interest in my problems?" Independents sprang up to answer that with a resounding "YES". Shortly thereafter IDA was formed to help those "pioneers" exchange important information and tips on this exciting and profitable new market...the heavy equipment aftermarket.
Beginning This new alliance of rebuilders and parts suppliers at first called their trade association the "Associated Independent Rebuilders and Parts Suppliers". As more and more manufacturers and importers saw the importance and growth of the aftermarket, the key words became DISTRIBUTION and INDEPENDENT. In 1963 the association incorporated those key words and became the "Associated Independent Distributors".
In 1986, to more clearly emphasize the development of the aftermarket industry, the name was changed to "INDEPENDENT DISTRIBUTORS ASSOCIATION".
Today Over half (52%) of IDA Regular Members employ less than 10 employees, yet 8% of them employ over fifty people. Whether large or small they all retail parts. A whopping 97% of the Regular Members are parts retailers. Many of them also enjoy a wholesale business (some 57%), and 73% of the association's Regular Members have service shops. On the manufacturing side of the roster, the average manufacturer has been in business for over fifty years and employs 337 people. IDA is diverse and experienced, and its members are well informed.
Aims The goal is very simple, to continue offering end users a viable alternative for parts and service. To accomplish this simple goal, members need technical expertise, pricing information, management aids, sales help and basic market knowledge. They get it from their association.
Benefits By working together as members of IDA, Independents in the afermarket industry gain strength. What we cannot do individually, we can accomplish together. A strong Association can accomplish many things.
- Relief from unfair competition from the Original Equipment Manufacturer
- Work towards fair import tariffs on machine parts
- Improve the recognition and acceptance of the replacement parts industry
- Maintain our competitive edge through quality products and quality service
- Continuously improve our services to customers
- Provide a forum for networking worldwide with industry peers
- Report up-to-date, accurate industry information and statistics
Networking With the diverse makeup of the members around the world, IDA serves as a vast resource of professional knowledge and expertise that contributes to the overall advancement of aftermarket parts and service. Unlimited benefits and increased business opportunities are derived from personally knowing other industry independent parts suppliers.
Annual Convention The international IDA Convention is held every year and is designed to attract a large membership body for in-depth networking about the industry on a worldwide basis. The well-rounded program includes professional speakers, expert panels, special events and social activities.
These are working conventions with seminars and educational sessions filling the program schedule. Speakers impart expertise helpful in dealer business operation and management.
Independent distributors meet with suppliers, share technical information and provide education that promotes the acceptance of our parts and services in the construction community.
Trade Exhibition Members have an opportunity to meet the manufacturers and suppliers displaying their products at attractive exhibits during the trade show at each annual convention.
Private consultations abound on and off the trade show floor, providing an opportunity to conduct member-to-member business negotiations.
Communications The UNIVERSAL is a timely newsletter that keeps members informed about what is happening around the corner and across the world. It is true 'nuts-and-bolts' newsletter featuring useful information about the industry. Keeping information flowing, which improves business techniques and aids in basic sales promotions, is a prime reason for our newsletter. Being informed helps stimulate the selling of more merchandise and services by the independent distributor.
Improve Quality Standards The quality control reporting system within the association promotes a joint member effort to establish and maintain an acceptable standard of quality and uniformity of products.
Legislative Monitoring Politicians and bureaucrats keep finding ways to threaten our businesses. IDA is part of the only federal watchdog exclusively devoted to the heavy vehicle parts and service business. Legislation that affects a part of the industry will quickly have an impact worldwide. IDA works to keep you informed of pending or proposed legislative changes.
International Affairs IDA is a worldwide organization with members in over 40 countries. It is not surprising that independent parts suppliers have similar problems and concerns whether they are doing business next door or half way around the world. The Association is working to bring members together to share information on international developments important to its members.
Printing Services The Association can provide assistance in the printing of forms, stationary, envelopes (send us samples) and custom design work at discounted membership prices. Call for your Free Estimate!
